Before you judge him.

(I tagged this as spoilers, but thought i’d add it here as well)

Tragic points in Guren’s life: Since the age of 5 (maybe younger) he was trained everyday and left with bruises. He was okay with it all because he knew people had high expectations of him. His diet was managed strictly, not even allowing for birthday cake. The first time he really asked for something, it was for an allowance so he could buy cake to make a girl smile and be happy. He was beat up to the point of broken bones and passing out while his father can only stand by. He doesn’t blame his father and continues to love and respect him. At 16 he is forced to go to a school where everyone except his 2 subordinates that he is separated from assault him verbally and physically. Finds out the girl he loves is engaged to another man. Said man attacks him and sends him to the infirmary. Gets attacked on his own home by the Hyakuya sect. The girl he loved turned into a demon.  He is tortured for days by the Hiiragis under the very school he is forced to attend. He himself was forced into becoming a demon in order to save his friends.  He cut off his own arm so that he wouldn’t hurt his comrade. Gets taken over by his demon in order to save his friends. Gets experimented on. Tries to commit suicide with the girl he loves because he doesn’t want to kill her. He is forced to kill the girl he loves anyway. His father is beheaded in front of him. He lives every day fighting for control of his own mind.  He lives every day showing a facade so as not to worry those he cares about. He is forced to lead a suicide mission where many of his men die and results in him getting captured rescuing his subordinates only for them to be slaughtered for an experiment by the man who sent him on said suicide mission.

“Did you knows” about Guren:

Multiple characters say multiple times that Guren is in fact too kind for his own good.

We actually have yet to see him perform any experiments except on himself. The first time he gets tests done, he tells the scientists that he will be the only test subject. When Shinoa later confronts him about experiments, he gives her a metaphorical answer based on ethics, not an admission to personally performing human experimentation on Yu.

Shinya was not mad at the fact Guren and Mahiru had sex, or the fact Guren told him about it. 

Guren *trusted* Shinya with Mahiru in case he died (while trying to save his friends)                                                                                                         

Shinya was actually mad because he wasn’t selfless like Guren and was jealous of that trait.                                                                                                  

Before the big suicide mission, he taught Shinoa to be a more mature and capable leader. This lesson provided her with better judgement that has saved her squad multiple times already.                                                                    

He has saved Yu from vampires multiple times. When a depressed Yu told him living hurts and asked him for a reason to live, Guren wasn’t abusive or controlling by saying “live for me”. He instead told Yu to find people that need him, to live for that day. He then proceeded to provide Yu with the very people Yu comes to value as family, the people that need him.                                                         

Yu literally cries at the thought of abandoning him to the vampires.                                    

Mother Teresa would be shocked at your compassion, Mother Guren. You’re still going to die.
